he purpose of the MeSA-AE test is to measure an individuals visual attention control and cognitive flexibility. The test is useful in the assessment of these two key components of executive functioning. Executive functioning is defined as the cognitive abilities necessary for the self-regulation of behavior and the achievement of purposeful goals. It is an adaptation of the paper and pencil Trail Making Test using an automated computerized methodology. Its administration requires the use of a full-size iPad and a pen-like capacitive stylus.

The paper and pencil version of this test is one of the most widely used neuropsychological tests. Numerous research studies have found it to be very sensitive to general brain dysfunction and it is frequently used to assess executive functioning. This advance edition of the MeSA-AE test can be used to evaluate individuals between the ages fifteen to eighty-nine years old. Since the test administration, scoring and interpretation are automated, this test can be easily and accurately administered by an examiner’s assistant.

The use of the MeSA-AE requires that it be administered in accordance with the specified test guidelines under the supervision of a licensed health care professional who is qualified in the use and interpretation of psychological tests. The test by itself is not to be used as a stand-alone instrument in making any determination of impairment or diagnosis. Its primary function is to provide data that may prove helpful to clinicians as part of their comprehensive evaluation.
